If you want to get away this summer, even if it's by playing tourist at home, here are some ways to make your vacation so much fun you'll forget that you're on a budget.
With the recession and uncertainty in the economy, most people are watching their pennies but still want to have a little fun this summer, either by doing some fun activities near home or taking a trip. Here are some tips that will let you make the most of the season without breaking the bank. Be a Tourist at HomeStart by finding things to do around your city. Some towns offer discounts when you buy admission to several attractions at once. If you want to check out a variety of places, such as the zoo, art gallery and museum, this could be the way to go. Stay in a hotel so your "staycation" feels like a true getaway, minus the travel costs. Travel with FriendsIf you know people who want to do the same things as you or go to the same places, travel with them and rent a condo instead of a motel. Condos are often much less expensive than similar quality hotels, and they also have kitchens so you can also save money on food by making some of your meals there. Or stay in a hotel that offers suites with multiple bedrooms. These also often have small kitchen areas. But be sure you get along very well with the people you're traveling with; you won't get a break from them when you share accommodations. Ask for DiscountsIf you're a member of CAA or AAA, you may qualify for discounts at many hotels and restaurants. Even if you're not, it never hurts to ask, nicely, what the best offer is. Since many people are cutting back on traveling, hotels and other service businesses are usually eager to accommodate the customers they have left. Travel Last MinuteIf you like packaged vacations and aren't too picky about where you go, consider last-minute travel. Have your passport ready and your bags packed, and find out where the best deals are a few days before you leave. This type of travel isn't for everyone, but you can visit some unexpected places and have a great time even though you haven't planned the trip for months. Redefine the Word VacationYou don't have to head to a multi-city tour of Europe for it to qualify as going away. Heading to the beach for a relaxing few days, or visit a small town nearby for shopping and a picnic. Or combine your getaway with getting fit and go for hikes or bike rides. By thinking outside the box when planning your summer vacation, you can enjoy yourself, stay within your budget and create wonderful memories all at the same time.
