Going on a vacation is a fun experience, but it's best to be prepared to make the most of it. Doing research ahead of time is a key factor to having a good time there.

Travelling is a great opportunity to meet new people, learn about a new culture and explore a new environment. Even though a vacation is supposed to be about relaxing and getting away from work, it does involve planning and work to make it happen. The more homework a traveller does at home, the more relaxed she will be when she arrives at her destination. Here are some ideas to help make travelling a smooth and enjoyable process.

Read Up Before Heading Out

A traveller should find out as much as possible about the places she is visiting before she leaves. Even if she is going on a package tour, it would be a good idea to learn about where she is going because tours often give people free time to check out cities and towns along the way. Hit a bookstore or library and browse through some travel guides. The Internet is also a great resource from travel blogs to official city websites. One can also go to travel websites put out by the companies that make travel books like Lonely Planet, Let’s Go or Frommer’s to get a sense of which guides catch one’s interest. Then pick one up or borrow it from a friend.

Ask Around about the Travel Destination

A traveller should talk to everyone she knows, from her neighbour to workmates, about where she is visiting and see if they have been there and have any travel tips. They can help out by naming the restaurant they liked the best to even having family and friends she can hook up with when she reaches the new country. Especially in the age of Facebook and MySpace, someone is bound to have some tips or a contact for a fellow traveller heading there. It’s a great help if a traveller can have someone to touch base with in a new country.

Learn About the Culture and Laws

Read and talk to people about the culture of the country to be visited. If it is a conservative country, then packing one’s bags accordingly is important. A traveller can wear a thong bikini like she might do at home, but if all the women are wearing saris into the water, she is going to get a lot of attention – and likely not the good kind. As well, not only is the legal system a lot different from home, but the penal system can be much harsher. Doing drugs or insulting the royal family could lead to serious consequences, so it’s important to know and follow local rules and culture.

Travelling is one of the great luxuries a person can enjoy, and making sure it is enjoyable means researching about the destination ahead of time. It’s helpful to read about where one is going, talk to people about their travels there and to make sure to find out about important differences in culture and laws.
