Thanks for the well-written and useful information. I must say, I used to take Amtrak round-trip twice a week, and it's not as bad as the complainy people say. This was in the Northeast Corridor, before the Acela got underway. One tip; if traveling by rail, try to take a train that is scheduled to arrive at least an hour before you need to be at your destination. It's a comfy ride, but often a bit behind schedule! happy

Honestly, Amtrak is OK (no worse than flying service and experience wise, that's for sure), but whenever I use Amtrak I complain... because it is so inferior to Europe's rail system.

It was funny... one trip when I was sprinting to the train (since they don't let you on the platform early like they do in Europe, so annoying), I heard another couple grumbling about how much better the rail system is in Europe. I told them I agreed!

It's a shame our rail system here isn't more affordable and user-friendly. It would make a nicer alternative if it were... and if it had more high-speed routes than just the overpriced Acela.

I agree. The USA is waaay too focused on the private car as transport. It's just not a sustainable option. Europe is light years ahead of us.

Yes, there (unless you are extremely rural), there are even bus systems for smaller cities. You can get almost anywhere, inexpensively by public transport.
