In Calgary (Canada) we have an annual "Taste of Calgary" event in August. A lot of restaurants set up booths in a park and for a few dollars you can get a reasonable taster from your choice. You buy tickets so you can make it a meal if you like. There's food, drink, and a really happy family atmosphere.

It's a bit different than a restaurant week, but "Taste of" events are also a great way to try out a city's best restaurants without having to pay a lot.

I always try to see if one is going on when I visit a new city.
